At last the GTi turned up today

Must say was it a surprise as i havent heard anything for a week since paying a deposit via Ebay

Anyway im happy to report she was worth the wait and is completely RUST FREE with no sighs of ever having had any paint work done

I think i might keep this one and convert over to DOHC spec

That’s the most basic GTi I’ve ever seen.... steel wheels, SOHC engine, cloth seats, manual windows....

Alloys were optional on the 216GTi and many were sold without but most that have survived have had the steel wheels replaced by alloys. Cloth bolsters and manual windows were also standard. Only the 216 Twin Cam and 220GTi got the leather bolsters, elec windows and alloys.

Why you looking

been off road in a home garage since 2003 so it's never had a computerized MOT hence no records

Little update on the GTI. After one week of socking the pistons in diesel she still refused to turn

so i had no option to remove the head to see what was going on and was greeted with this

So after a another few days in diesel, a block of wood and i big hammer she finally when crack and started to move

After removing pistons 2 and 3 which here completely rusted with all the rings stuck i took them to work and a day in the cleaner they came up like new and with a set of unstuck piston rings

Unfortunately the same wasnt to be say for cylinder bore 3

After a clean up and a hone she was just to far gone to repair

As you see it wouldnt even be worth getting a over sized piston as the block has very bad corrosion which is a shame as its the original engine fitted at factory
Anyway for the sake of a £15 headgasket im just putting it back together for now so i can move it about while i get a engine sorted as 3 dead R8's on drive is to much
