Finally got to do the front brake swap back to standard - the hold-up was finding a local DTI.

So the original "14inch" front discs and calipers have been put back on the car. They were removed early on in the cars life and hardly have any wear on them.

The DTI was used to check that the run-out was minimised by the position of the disc relative to the hub

They replace the MG ZR "15inch" brakes and allow for the fitment of the original wheels

The 2 pairs of calipers used the same pads so I'm bedding them back in now.

Indeed. People who mod cars don't realise just how much money motor manufacturers spend on cosmetic design and appearance. If making something look "better" was that easy, there'd be loads of "coach builder" type companies still around and supported by the vehicle manufacturers themselves.

Every time you put a car back to original a lightbulb moment occurs - an instant recognition that the mod you did was really just so your car could look different or "be the best." Original is best!

Any chance of an idiots guide how to on the gear stick gaiter replacement?
I need to do that on my late model coupe and got stuck when it came to taking off the dash round the radio

The Haynes manual covers it pretty well but simply, and as far as I can remember, it goes something like this:-

1. Remove rear centre console - remove rear ashtray and small access panel under handbrake lever to access screws (if you've got the armrest/high centre console you might need to take the cassette/CD tray out from inside the console) The rear fixing just need loosening, nor removing completely as the console slides off them.
2. Remove radio and disconnect harness connectors
3. Unscrew gearknob from lever (anticlockwise)
4. Remove 4 screws by front occupant's feet - 2 each side of the front part of the centre console
5. Carefully prize out upper part of centre console around top row of 5 switches
6. Disconnect harness connectors to switches and cigarette lighter
7. Put car into 2nd or 4th and withdraw console to rear of car, over gearlever

The gaitor is attached to the underside of the console with a small metal plate secured with 4 small screws.

Refitting is a simple reversal of the above steps :laughing

Good luck :D

Thanks seems easy enough - how do you get the radio out is there a special tool?

If it's a standard Philips radio there's a U-shaped tool that goes into the pair of holes at each end of the headunit. Having 2 of these tools makes it very easy but you can manage with one.

Alternatively, 2 long, stout pop rivets can be used but they're a bit more of a faff...
