Thank you for allowing me to join this wonderful site.
I own a J reg 1992 214Si which was bought new by grandfather from Royles in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. It has 57,000 miles, and is in perfect nick (well the bumpers have faded, but other than that...).

Thank you all. Once I manage to convince my uncle the mechanic that the problem it has can't be the carb diaphragm he claims it is (he has this belief that the car isn't fuel injected, with a previous problem he thought it was the auto choke and was going to install a manual choke until I reminded him that it didn't have a choke...), and get the car back from his garage (I'm waiting to see one of the lads that work with him, to ask them to to have a look and tell him its fuel injected and then maybe he'll get the idea), I'll post some photos. The number plates were changed last year, but I'll post a pic of the original dealer plates too. Oh and the mats don't match, being carried over from a F reg 213 he traded in for the 214, that was bought at a Looker's dealership, and have their logos on them.

What’s the issue you’re having with it?

As I coming around a roundabout to get off the local bypass it started to judder slightly, then at the end of the slip road when I stopped at the next roundabout and tried to take off again it stalled. It took some fancy work with the clutch to get to a quiet turnoff on the roundabout leading to a housing estate where I sat for a while in case it was a heat problem, then started again and revved fine,but needed more fancy footwork to avoid stalling, then driving the half mile or so back home it seemed to be in a limp home mode, I couldn't go above 3rd/15mph or so with my foot to the floor. I was thinking a sensor or a crack in an air pipe beyond the sensor confusing the ECU.

Does it start & run OK when cold or is the issue present all of the time?

All the time. It starts and idles and revs ok, but when you put in gear and try to release the clutch it stalls unless you're very careful.
The lad that picked it up on a low loader said that he could just about get it going over level ground, but when he tried driving it up the ramp onto the deck of the low loader, it just stalled again.

It would be worth checking the very thin vacuum pipe that runs to the ECU. It may be blocked or have a split in it, or even fallen off.
