
They differ from normal 'summer' tyres in their construction (usually a slightly softer sidewall), rubber composition (not going as hard as 'summer' rubber when the temperature drops below 7degC) and tread design (different tread pattern and more 'sipes' to dig through the slush/snow/ice).
They're therefore a little softer and can wear more when the temps rise again, so they're not ideal for use all year round - that's where 'All Season' tyres come in...
