Press for removing suspension bushes

Post by Plodder »

Anyone used a one ton arbor press for pushing out suspension bushes?.
I can buy one for £80 .

Is it worth the investment or do we think it wouldn’t be good enough/strong enough to push the bushes out.

Just wondering if it could make life easier to replace all the suspension bushes or if it is a complete waste of money.

Anyone had any experience?

When it comes to pressing out a bush you obviously need enough space underneath the arm to clear it as it comes out. It doesn't look like you'd have that with the press you've shown. I've just rebushed my upper rear links using one of these, widely available on ebay for around £60.

It's pretty crude, basically a 6 ton hydraulic jack in a frame, but it did the job no problem. I haven't tried it on something like a lower rear arm which I think might be a bit more of a challenge.

I've done bushes on upper and lower rear suspension links and also the trailing arms. I cut the old ones out by drilling through the rubber to remove the centre of the old bush and then carefully cut a slit in the outer shell with a hacksaw so it can be collapsed slightly and knocked out. They are often corroded in which can make it hard work for a press. I got the new ones in by using lubrication, a big vice and finished off with a socket/pipe and a hammer. However, much nicer to use one of these presses. You may need to use it with some bits of tube to provide clearance and to press on the outer part of the new bush. This worked on the Rover suspension, but I did have to go round to a friendly garage to press in some new bushes on the Hillman front suspension. It was a 20 tonne hydraulic press. I'm not sure a 1 tonne press would be enough to shift the Rover bushes.

Thanks for all the advice.
I have the large vice, courtesy of my late dad.
Will start by drilling out the rubber and then cutting the casing , as suggested , until I can find another solution.
Did buy myself a tool for extracting the trailing arm bushes off ebay a few years ago, having lashing one together using an extractor and a rather large lump of steel from work, haven't had to use it on the trailing arm bushes as they seem to have lasted a good few years. (Probably fail now :slapme )
Might see if I can adapt it. But have the feeling it might not have been the best buy :laughing2
