Rocker Cover & Alternator

Post by Paul_1978_yorks »

I've got a bit of an oil leak and suspect the rocker cover gasket. I've got it in for a full service on Tuesday and will be getting them to do the rocker cover gasket at the same time.
Is this a simple/cheap job for them to do?

My alternator also sounds noisy, although I am getting no symptoms of it failing. I will ask them to check the tension of the belt, but wonder what the cost of a new alternator, supplied and fitted is - any ideas?

This is for my silver SEi.

Cheers

The rocker cover gasket isn't too bad a job to fix. An hour to swap I'd guess at.

What sort of noise is the alternator making? Is it a belt squeal or is it mre of a whine. Try spraying a little WD40 or similar at the belt run to see if the noise goes away (indicating a belt noise rather than something more serious).

My alternator went end of last year, I paid £76 IIRC inc VAT.

An hour to swap! It's all labour, but it needs doing really.

Hard to describe the noise - I'd say it was a squeak rather than a whine. At least if I get them to check the tension of the belt it's one more thing to eliminate.

Thanks for the reply. Cheers, Paul

That doesn't sound too bad - was that including the fitting at the garage or did you do it yourself?

Yeah that was an all up price at an auto electric place, which luckily happened to be round the corner from work.

If you can get a replacement, I dont suppose fitting it would be too much of a problem, as its just bolted into place under the engine.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

They did the full service (inc coolant change) and I also got my rocker cover gasket done.

The alternator belt has been checked and the tension was OK, so they lubed the bearings. Still noisy slightly noisy though, but I'm not getting any symptoms of it failing so I'll put up with it.

Cheers for now
