Fuel Tank Differences

Post by crepello »

I've been looking for a fuel tank for my 1991 214S. There weren't that many of these made, but they had a different tank to all the others. The 214S used tank WFE10130, superceded by WFE10131. Pretty well everything else used tank WFE10074, superceded by WFE10129. All according to the legacy parts lists.

Naturally, the one I want is NLA from XPart and aftermarket alike, whereas the other appears to be still available from either source. So the question is, would it be possible to modify the available one to suit? Does anyone know the detail differences? Ever the optimist, I'm hoping that the 214S, being more basic, just needed less pipe connections, or similar, which I could just blank off.

Cheers,

Right, the 214S is the version that used a carburettor, not fuel injection.

My guess would be that the 214S probably has an engine-mounted mechanical fuel pump, whereas all of the injected cars have an electric pump mounted in the tank.

I think it would probably be possible to modify the 'injection' tank to fit, but the best way would be to try to get hold of a secondhand one complete with the pump etc still fitted, otherwise you may be struggling to blank off a large hole.

The physical tank itself will be the same or similar, it'll be the fuel pickup and maybe the vent that is different. As the fuel pickup is swapped from the original tank this shouldn't be a problem.

If it has an in-tank fuel pump on the 214s then it should be a fairly straight swap.

Is this the type of tank you're looking for ?

One hole, not 2...

I'm learning about tanks myself.

At that price, it's a shame it isn't. The 214S has a separate sender unit, in the blank site visible on the Rimmer tank pic Most intriguing that the same outline carried forward to the 400 Mk!!. As someone else surmised, the 214S has a camshaft-driven mechanical pump. They're actually still available. Rimmers got me a pattern one last year for less than £20 after a bit of a wait. It turned up in a genuine SU box, which I've kept for its looks! Commercially maybe a pattern part, but made from the original tooling. Should last me until 2030 or thereabouts...

I might be faced with getting a transition plate made to take the 214S suction pipe to make it compatible with an in-tank pump flange, I guess. I haven't dropped my tank, so I don't know all the details yet.

You're right about this !

I asked a chap who used to work in fuel systems at Longbridge and he confirmed that the basic tank was carry-over to the 'HHR' generation Rover 400 - as it had the same rear suspension as 'our' 200/400 it's perhaps not a big surprise.

At least that widens the scope for a replacement.....

Is this the right type ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-400-Pet ... 2a13d89d87
