Ashleys Rover - progress

Post by martin_bmth »

Usually cars get names in my house but this blue 216 cabriolet seems to have got stuck with being known as "Ashleys car" after its former keeper. I thought id start a thread to keep up with whats going on.

Ive given the radiator brackets and battery clamp a coat of hamerite so they look nice. :clapping

This weekend proper work started and its got a new head gasket, radiator and thermostat (Beware eurocarparts thermostats and their wrong seal -small one in pic! They will leak like a sieve and you have to do it again).

Ive decided to swap to OAT coolant as it matches my other cars. All went well and everything runs up, heater gets hot and the fan kick in when they should.

Belts and water pump are very new and didnt need replacing.

Stuff to do before MOT seems to be:
- replace blowing exhaust section (ive not looked to see whereit is yet).
- adjust/ fix handbrake. (not rovers strong point at the best of times :laughing2 )
- Fix fog lights (button doesnt light up so im guessing its a fuse)

Nice non-esensential stuff to do:
- Good clean and a polish
- give the roof a greasing and make sure its all loose ready for the summer.
- Tidy the bodywork to keep the rust at bay
- find a nice front bumper and bonnet in the right colour (both are ratty and are probably cheaper to replace with nice ones than try to fix.
- refub wheels as ones a slightly different colour
- Collect the spare doors from Ashley and drop a crate of beer round to him for being such a great bloke.

Thanks Tony, I feel more like a custodian than a keeper of this car. Its so old school with the original tape player, its like going back to 1997 when you sit in it. :)

Im thinking of taking it to POL next year. :D

Yes, it is good to get updates from members as to what they are doing and the occasional progress report. There should be more of these types of postings. Great to see you are getting on with it and keeping another one roadworthy. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Cheers,

All the lights work now - the rear fog switch is a little temperamental. Will try to pick up a replacement some time. :D

Stumbled at the last hurdle with the MOT, one of the rear brakes isnt working well enough... Its the only problem found so my mechanic is gonna give it a wiggle and perhaps a new brake cylinder and we should be all sorted for a Monday retest :D :clapping
