It is mate, one careful owner since new who did 6 monthly services like clockwork. I will be bringing it to POL and hopefully Gaydon in May.
Just a few scuff marks which I've already got rid of and some rust spots which I'm working on.

Oh amazing! I must admit I was tempted myself! Not too keen on the idea of the engine with an auto - what d'you think? How did you get the scuffs out the bumpers?

Some wet and dry and some wire wool. There's a few deep ones which will need filing but I'm not sure what to use for that at the moment.
It drives really nicely with smooth gear changes. I've managed to get the white paint to shine a bit now with some paint restorer. Just the rust to deal with.

I for one would appreciate chapter and verse on this topic - perhaps a topic for The Viking? Although bumpers were considered relatively expendable, now that some patterns are unobtainable new, that's no longer true. If originality is important to us, overpainting a scuff repair is presumably out.

I am far from an expert but managed to remove scuffs and minor scratches doing what I did. I'm sure others have filled them before, it's just hard trying to find the topics within the forum to find out what they used.
Rather than use actual peanut butter I used 100% groundnut oil rubbed in which brought them up in a nice shine.
Would never risk the blow torch method cos I know I'd mess it up!!

(maybe this conversation should be taken out of this thread and moved as it's clogging up the original topic!)

Good idea :wink3

If you send a PM to GTi John or montegoman, one of them could probably move the relevant bits to the new 'Project Cars' forum. Then all you will need to do is add a few pics, because as we all know, :useless :laughing2

Would you be interested in taking the GTi to the NEC on 4th, 5th & 6th March to carry on with some of the good work?

Is that the restoration show then? What's the crack there then? Is the car/s left there or taken back and forth each day?
I could probably make it one of the days I'm guessing depending on the format.
Would be nice to get some help with the rusty bits if I haven't done them by then.

Cars have to be in the show by Friday evening and then cannot be removed until Sunday evening, so I appreciate it is difficult for many people to take part unless they live (or have friends with a spare bedroom!) within commuting distance of the NEC.

However, if you just want to come to the show in person, we can fix you up with a free entry ticket and I have a really scruffy grey front bumper I can bring along for you to work your magic on (it had been sat behind a shed in my garden for over 10 years: we demolished the shed a couple of months ago :laughing2 )
