I would be grateful for any help or advice regarding my 2003 Rover 45 1.6 after its recent MOT. For the last 5 years the car has passed its MOT with no advisories, however this year it has had 2 listed (please see attachment).
After the MOT was completed, I booked an appointment at the same garage to get the car back up on the ramp and get them to explain the advisories to me, which they were kind enough to do. The chap who inspected the car with me was not the chap who had conducted the MOT, and after inspection said I was unlucky to have had the advisories listed. He took a power tool with a wire brush attachment and applied it to a small area on the offside subframe to show me that the rust was just surface rust and there was bare metal underneath. I took this opportunity to take some photographs of the front subframe myself.
He said his advice would be to have the underneath of the car sandblasted, and then waxoiled afterwards, but he did not know of anywhere that could do this treatment. (I live in Rugby, Warwickshire).
As my car is generally in excellent condition for its age (it was originally presented to a former Rover employee as a retiring present/ golden handshake), I have tried to look after it. However, having had a cancer diagnosis just before Christmas 2023, and undergoing treatments, the car has been stood awhile, and I want to get it back to its best condition as I want to be able to keep it for many years to come.
Based on the attached photographs, I was thinking would it be best to purchase a front subframe and have it fitted and then find somewhere that can perform the underside surface rust removal and waxoil, or does the subframe look generally okay and just need the surface rust removing etc without replacing it?
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Kind Regards
V.
