214 MPi Exhaust Front and Mid pipe

Post by Jewel 25 »

Hi there, I have had my 214 for just over a year now. I replaced the back box when I bought the car as it was leaking however it now looks like the mid pipe is about had it ( the burbling noise produced by the exhaust makes me think the innards have gone too) .

The front pipe flexpipe mesh has started to unravel ( no leaks though) I have used some tin foil and cable ties to stop this making a rather annoying noise when accelerating.

Anyway... do these prices look reasonable for replacemnet parts?

My back box from the local Unipart factors was £36 last year.

With postage and the two gaskets, mid and front pipe it is £78 .

Another question I would like to ask is ...

Is it worth painting these before fitting them to the car. I have a large tin of Hammerite in lovely Beige. i have noticed the welds and brackets/flanges become corroded in no time.

Make sure you use VHT paint! (...or BBQ paint)

Exhaust generally rust from the inside out, especially if you do lots of short journeys. Only way you're really going to beat it is SS.

P.s, sorry but those links aren't working for me!

The prices are fine, but the job might be a bit of a task. I had a bolt shear on the CAT that took me while and an angle grinder to fix.

Thanks for the reply. I will apply some wd40 the night before. As for joining the different sections , will the supplied gaskets be enough? or would you recommend some sealant?

id suggest finding a local parts dealer that supply to garages in the local area, you will often find they are cheaper than partco

You can use sealant on the joins after the cat, but not before. There is a risk of bits of hard sealant breaking off and damaging the cat as it passes through.
As Streetboy says, no point in painting it at all. It won't prevent corrosion.

Best to get a universal joint, 15mm 6-point socket, and long extension for the manifold to front-pipe bolts. Might need a 13mm 6-point as well...can't remember. The usual 12-point sockets round the nuts off very easily.
As said before though, prepare for sheared-off bolts anyway.
If you're planning to keep the car, get a good coating of copper grease on all the threads as you re-assemble. Makes it a lot easier if you need to change anything again.
