Going to be expensive?
Going to be expensive?
Having just spent £300 getting my 220gti t through the MOT the following has happened.
On Tuesday the speedo gave up, it will work when I take my foot off the gas but as soon as I accerelate it goes down to zero.
Today, the car has now started disengaging itself from 5th gear whilst going along. The other gears seem to be ok.
Any ideas anyone? - good job its before I commit to a re-spray I guess.

Re: Going to be expensive?
Check the engine mount and the security of the speedo cable into the gearbox.
However also check for play in the inner CV joints where they fit into the gearbox. If there is lots of play or you get a wobble type vibration on acceleration then chances are the gearbox needs a rebuild.

Re: Going to be expensive?
When my Austin Maxi had something similar, the gearbox was about to disintegrate (which happened very shortly after). Is it possible, that the gear driving the speedo drive can move so far (if something is broken) that the speedo looses drive? Jumping out of gear can point in the same direction. I'd be careful (i.e. avoid) using it until the reason for both failures has been found.

Blimey, I wish I was a better mechanic, I am good on oil changes and plugs etc!
The engine mount on the driver's side seems solid enough. I can't see where the speedo joins the gearbox, I think you need to move the airbox to see down there, but I was doing this at half time!
All in all looks like a garage job, but the best guy for it is in Sheffield an I am in Abingdon.......................and it sounds like I should not drive it that far even in 4th.

Re: Going to be expensive?
if its anything simular to the r65 box there is another mount under the box with an arm connecting to the chassis..
mine was fecked and wouldnt let me come out of first because it wasnt holding the box low enough for the linkage to not foul the rest of the car! also unscrew the speedo and have a look at the gear condition??

Re: Going to be expensive?
That's interesting - some welding was done underneath for the MOT, I wonder if it involved undoing that engine mount, it does seem odd that all this has happened as soon as it came back from the garage.............

Re: Going to be expensive?
It sound to me as if the bearings have worn out in the differential - a known weak spot in the PG1 gearbox as used on a 220.

Hmm, that's not good, no respray this year then. Back to the gargae tomorrow to see what they say - more anon!
Re: Going to be expensive?
Well I have got to the bototm of the speedo problem, the bottom end of the cable must be held in by a spring clip or circlip which has gone AWOL so that's a trip to Halfords to get a new one as I don't have anything the right size in stock.
I guess that will not explain the gearbox problem though. What is worrying is that there was quite a bit of oil around the speedo cable housing which I assume must have come from the gearbox so I guess it will be low on oil. It will have to go to the garage for the next investigation as I just don't have the technical know how to make the diagnosis or the facilities to take it out.
My next question then is can anyone reccommend an exchange supplier or does it really have to be rebuilt? If the latter does anyone know how long that should take a professional mechanic?

Re: Going to be expensive?
Then I read the manual (well for a 214 anyway and I guess the principle is the same?) and its clearly not as simple as that to fix the speedo cable so we'll see what the garage says. I suspect that there is going to be a tussle between cost and value when I get a quote to fix all this as I have already spent a lot of money on a car which I still can't use and the roof has get to be resprayed as well soon because the lacquer is crazed.
