Why front fogs so rare?
Re: Why front fogs so rare?
I hope so!, can't see anything wrong with having the yellow tints myself either, or get the yellow headlight paint!

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
Yellow supplementary lighting such as foglights remain legal, as long as they're already fitted to the vehicle before the rules were introduced.
On a vehicle manufactured in the 1990's, you won't have an issue.
The regulations apply to new vehicles, where the EU has now stated that forward facing lights need to be predominantly white. Blue tinted lights also need to be mainly white.
I've just put the Gti through an MOT with yellow fogs. Nothing was said.

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
If you can get inside the units it might be best to put the paint there so that it can't be scratched off. It might also fool the tester into thinking that the colour is original.

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
You're making a very good point, Sir Henry.
The yellow tinting paint has always had a reputation for scratching easily. In my opinion, it's not very effective. It's also very difficult to get an even colour coat across the lenses.
The paint was sold for drivers crossing into Europe - France, mainly - on short term driving holidays. It might last a few weeks, but don't expect a classy finish. Also bear in mind that France changed its own rules a while back, so it's not so common anymore.
Try to find an original pair in saturated yellow, if you can. They're still out there. Ring used to sell sets until recently.
Just as a point of interest, research still confirms that yellow lights work better in foul weather and heavy snow - they don't cause so much driver dazzle. Even so, Eurocrats don't like them..!
I find them great in fog/heavy snow.....when we get the stuff.

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
Yeah, I agree with what your saying, they do weather quickly, I remember few years ago my father had them in his motor.
I'l see what I can do .
I do recall ring or someone selling a nice combo set which had a white half and a separate yellow half, cant seem to find them these days.

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
This is obviously not what you are looking for ... but I recall years ago that you could get yellow plastic covers to allow use while abroad. Back then our white fog lights were illegal in France and most of the rest of Europe (pre Common Market) and these were acceptable to the scuffers over there.
As far as painting the inside of a lamp unit goes, I'd try it with a spare unit or two first to see how you get on with it. Pour the lacquer into the unit, swish it around so that it covers the whole of the inside of the lense and reflector, drain out the excess and then leave it (inverted on the first attempt) to dry.

Re: Why front fogs so rare?
Yeah, I have fogs on the way, although I'm not exactly enthusiastic about taking them apart , I do have some headlight Perspex covers which I have put a xenon film on , illegal for on road use but look the monkeys nuts when at a show or display, and that I can easily remove them.
I wonder , if there's not too much of a curve on the fog light lens that I may be able to have some Perspex cut to shape and apply a film of paint to them and clip them on somehow...?
I think getting the proper ones will be long gone now .
