Be carful with gasket sealant as petrol can dissolve it. If it does try putting on 2 cork gaskets and tighten down very carefully.

Thanks for that info I'll bear it in mind. It's kinda strange though that it can withstand 300 degrees but can't withstand petrol. Now it's been flattened enough I think if I did manage to get the right cork gaskets I'd probably just swap them over. I think that is what happened to the old one though as it had totally gone on one side.

Thanks Bryan, It's far from perfect as it needs a respray, some rust starting to come through on the arches and the interior needs finishing off as well but it's getting there.

I just need someone who can fund me a paint job on it as that is the major thing that needs doing now seeing as the engine leak has been sorted now and then it's just a case of titivating :*laughing my fat rear end off*

I'm picking up a set of OZ Polaris 17" wheels to come when I pick them up from POL to go on the car but I think they are going to have to wait to go on until I can get an everyday car to run the family about in as with all the family in the Gti with 17's on the wheels catch the arches.

After the success of Pol I've got to fix the annoying little problem of the leaking car of oil from the cam seal so this morning I ordered a new set and they should arrive tomorrow.

Still not sure how I'm going to remove the old one and replace with the new one just yet without having to remove the cam tops and cams.

After ordering them I decided to try the wheels I got from James at the weekend.

They have gone on a treat and so far just one tyre needs attention in a puncture repair that I'm hopefully going to sort along with getting the wheels balanced this afternoon after the auto wind shield place turns up to fix a chip I noticed on Friday on the windscreen.

They are going to need a refurb but for now they look a lot better than the hairpins.

It does look good - got to admit though I do like hairpins - think they suit practically any Rover\MG I have seen them on :)

I know what you mean about the hairpins. If only they did them in 17's they'd be perfect. I remember the tsw hockenheim wheels had the look of hairpins.
