Odd steering behaviour

Post by Dollywobbler »

There's something not right with my 416. It occasionally feels very torque-steery but there's also an occasional clonk in very slow, very tight-lock scenarious. With the front in the air, there appears to be no play at the hubs - though I've not yet repeated those tests with a lever acting on the tyre. Could it be a balljoint issue?

No knocks or rattles on the move, even when cornering. PAS pump is noisy but seems to be operating consistently ie assistance doesn't seem to vary - the car just feels a bit vague at brief moments.

Any thoughts?

Outer CV joints locking up for a very short time?

How old are they ?

You might feel something with the wheel in the air but you really need the wheels at about the correct ride height.

I'm sure somebody on here will know how to test them.

I have no history with the car at all, so no idea about anything! Certainly something to consider though, so thanks for that.

Bottom balljoints are a likely suspect. Check with a lever to see if you can get any movement.

If not then check track rod ends too.

My previous 216GSi used to torque steer on sweeping left hand bends, but she lacked power steering. Perhaps my current steed is a little down on power but I had formed the opinion that they didn't torque steer with a power rack fitted?

Don't forget to check the rear trailing arm bushes too as these are a very common failure and will cause very floaty/imprecise steering (and sometimes odd tyre wear too depending on how badly it has failed).
