Rover appears to supply 2 of the 50cc sachets of CV grease per CV joint (yes, I bought genuine Rover outer CVs).
I'm assuming I only use 1 per joint, as when I buy a boot kit, it only comes with one sachet of 50cc grease.
If that's true, why do they supply 2 ??

Yes, I am that messy. More on me than in the joint.1234dist wrote:they obviously thought you needed two![]()

I've only put one packet in the inner CVs, so I did something right... although you read what people say on the interweb (mostly American) who want to top-off the inner CVs with grease before squishing the tripod in

I was told by an old mechanic that you use 2 packs (or the pack plus extra from a tin of appropriate grease) if the joint is brand new or you have completely cleaned the old joint (as in, soaked it in degreaser to dissolve all the grease in the joint for inspection purposes etc). He regarded one pack as an insufficient quantity for proper lubrication in this case.

1 pack was definitely enough for the inner CVs, as you can clearly see what's involved. Less than 50cc came out, and putting 50cc in meant I was dolloping it into the bottom of the casings as per Haynes.Julesmat50 wrote:I was told by an old mechanic that you use 2 packs (or the pack plus extra from a tin of appropriate grease) if the joint is brand new or you have completely cleaned the old joint (as in, soaked it in degreaser to dissolve all the grease in the joint for inspection purposes etc). You're probably right on new outer joints. I've read 60cc elsewhere, i.e. a pack and 20% from another. Also varies car to car depending on the CV joint size.
I'll wait and see how much I can work into the new joints and go from there.
