My 216 coupe has been making a creaking noise from behind the near side dash when going over bumps, now there is a crack in the windscreen coming up from near the bottom corner, no sign if impact, may this indicate something wrong with steel work around windscreen, is this a known problem area?

Hi

From my bodywork experience I would suggest you remove the plastic scuttle cover & the side weatherstrip, carefully as the plastic clips are prone to breaking. This will expose the inner wing & A pillar area. If there's no visible damage ( creasing, cracking or corrosion ) you may need to remove the wing and investigate further.

It may sound alarming to do that but better safe than sorry.

If theres no damage it might be it's just body flex due to hitting a Pothole.

Has the car been fitted with a replacement windscreen?

The windscreen was replaced according to the previous owner.

I'm wondering if all the old cement was cleaned out before the new screen was fitted? but that's just a guess.

New windscreens are still available if you hunt around for one.

I have a new screen being fitted on Friday under insurance.
