Philips Radio

Post by Aaron169 »

Hello everyone!
I've slowly been upgrading my 1998 Rover 200 in various ways, and one thing i wanted to address was the stereo. It has the Rover R660 Tape deck, which is ok but very basic, and wont even support a CD changer. I have spare stereos lying around but they all seemed to modern and not very fitting. So in short, i want to upgrade my stereo with a better rover one, ideally that will support a CD changer.
Looking at some other rovers of the time, there are some better stereos that do support CD changers, but they all have the common trait of a seperate display. Now this display looks like it would fit perfectly in where my existing digital clock is.
So will i be able to fit a stereo with a separate display like the one below (which is an R760 out of a 400) in my 200? Has it been done? what wiring is needed? Also, which stereos support changers? Thanks

I know this seems like alot of fuss, but i like the idea of a period tape deck cd changer setup :D

CD changers are supported in R770 and R860. Philips models.

Model R760 does not support CD changer. Special display for that radio can be supported, but you need additinal wiring for it from radio unit to display. You need special Third connector for head unit and special connector for display unit.

It would be best if you could find WORKING head unit, display and CD changer unit as complete setup. It will be more difficult to find them separately. You also need cable from head unit to CD changer.

I have a Rover 416 SLi (1997, R reg, bubble shape) which originally had a R760 radio cassette. (no CD function)

Over the years I swapped the radio for a R860 as it supports a Philips 026 CD Changer.

On this car the wiring for the radio and display was the same and it only required a CD cable.

I also added the steering wheel controls at a later date.

Thanks for all that :)
Ideally that's what i would do, there is a rover breakers near me and i would get the full kit.
Also, am i correct in saying the late 90s Honda civic uses the same setup due to it being technically the same car? thanks

No, I do not think Honda Civic did this kind of setup for wiring radio and separate display.

Yep. I think stripping a scrapyard car would give you all the bits. That's how I did it many years ago. :blink

You are correct about the same shaped Civic. I also have a Honda Civic (1997 - same shape as the Rover 416Sli)

From new it came with a Pioneer radio cassette as standard and this had it's own built in display, ie it did not use the remote "clock" display as seen in the Rover.

To get a CD changer to work in the Civic I had to upgrade the Pioneer radio to one that supported a CD. As I recall I had to get a compatible Pioneer CD changer and lead.

Neither Pioneer radio would support the steering wheel controls.

Ive found a radio, but it is an R850 that does not use a seperate display. Does it support a changer?

Nope. R850 DOES NOT support CD changer.

R770, R860, R950 supports CD Changer.

However, R770 and R860 radio/cassette players does not support any CD Changer, but only Phillips 026 CD changer.

This is looking like quite a fuss now, all i really wanted was a stereo with just a rover badge on and at least a CD player. However, looking at the newer cars, the 45 has a rover branded cd player, so that looks like the one ill go for. thanks for all the advice!

Careful, as the wiring harness plugs are different.
