Someone at Roverfest asked me about this - they had the same noise on a 420GSi sport. Older chap who was thinking about a re-spray.

I mentioned you'd had the same problem and suggested they try replacing the lower arm or having it looked at.

Got me thinking about one-off noises that might occur on turning a corner. My conclusion was that is could also be the front shocks as the piston rods turn with the front wheels, or of course the top mount bearings... Other than that, if it's a continuous noise it's probably CV joints.

I don't think the piston rods are likely to twist within their seals, as the suspension spring would also have to twist on one of its seats.

I'm trying to get this straight in my mind... top of the piston rod bolts to the top mount, which remains static and bolted to the car. Knuckles and hence the whole damper rotates with a turn of the steering wheel, so surely the piston rods are rotating with respect to the cylinder/outer bodies? Not with respect to the inner piston of course... Am I not understanding this correctly?
