Re: Roverfest 2021-postponed

Post by ReubenVP »

Sorry to bearer of bad news, just received this last night

IMPORTANT
It is with great regret that the Joint Rover Clubs committee has decided to postpone Roverfest until 2022.
We were looking forward to putting on another spectacular event for us all in August. In the UK, England has started its journey on a roadmap out of lockdown with a programme of vaccinations and plans to gradually relax Covid restrictions if circumstances permit. But there are warnings of another wave of Covid infections on the horizon.
The UK’s other devolved administrations are on similar but different timetables. This could affect travel in the UK and it seems unlikely that international visitors will be able to come to the UK for Roverfest in the short term.
Whilst we are all hoping that Covid 19 lockdown restrictions will be lifted by the summer and larger events may continue, that depends on the roadmap holding and a Government pilot scheme showing that this is feasible. It is likely that some restrictions on social distancing will still be in place. We note that some early events are planned from May and June but these are pre-booked only, to control attendance, with no turn up and pay on the day option and the events are liable to short notice cancellation.
Our events have always welcomed friends who choose to turn up on the day, boosting rally attendance. We don't know whether the book in advance requirement will be lifted and could be faced with a "booked in only" Roverfest event for 2021 with very little time remaining to make potential "I'll do it on the day” visitors aware given Club magazine issue dates and ultimately, not covering our expenses, which ultimately would have to be covered by the JRC clubs.
Now is the time of year when we normally start reserving, booking and paying for infrastructure and services for Roverfest, Covid safety measures are additional to our normal requirement. If we are unable to guarantee recouping at least the costs for these outgoings, then as a committee we will be acting irresponsibly in our duties to safeguard finances. Given the uncertainties we all face in the near future we do hope that you understand the rationale behind taking this difficult decision.
We are pleased to say that Sywell Aerodrome have carried forward all bookings for the on-site Aviator Hotel to the new dates 5th, 6th and 7th August 2022. If you intended staying at other hotels, you will need to change arrangements with them.
Roverfest entries and rally entry fees will be carried forward or can be refunded, if you prefer.
The JRC Committee hope that you will join us at Roverfest 2022.

Seems overly cautious thinking by committee
Given the pent up demand for shows I think a book ahead scheme would have worked
Won’t go in 2022 on principle now.

Totally disagree on this, sorry. It's a decision made by all clubs of the Joint Rover Clubs committee, and all the reasons they gave made perfect sense.
As a club chairman myself, I perfectly understand why they made that decision. Events of this scale just can't go on when there is such uncertainty on the near future.

The possible risk of cancellation due to future changes mean that the clubs would end up carrying the financial risks and being a cautious group, we're not comfortable with that.

The seed-funding and potential profits and losses are shared evenly between the JRC clubs, meaning that the smaller clubs would bear a disproportionate risk compared to their revenue.

I trust you'll reconsider your decision :)

Certainly disappointing :mad
I’m aware that other car clubs organising big events in the summer are struggling to make a decision as whether to go ahead or not, with the continuing uncertainty of the situation and the possible financial repercussions if things go the wrong way.
But I’ll certainly be looking forward to 2022 Roverfest

My experience over the last few days at work suggests that the decision to postpone the event is the right one.

I work on the trains and the behaviour of the vast majority of passengers has been appalling. Anyone would think that the Pandemic hasn't happened!

I worked the 18.56 from Brizzle TM to Cardiff yesterday, with a total of 84 passengers on a 3 car unit, 90% of whom were eating and drinking alcohol. At Filton another 40 or so boarded, again mainly youngsters with bottles and cans in their hands.

Just as I was closing the doors, one idiot jumped out on to the platform. The conversation went as follows. At this stage I should point out that most of our trains have areas shut off for staff travelling as part of their duties.

Aren't you going to beep beep open that section up?

No sir, it for staff only.

That's beep beep disgusting.

No sir, the majority of people of people are on here because they chose to be. Staff don't have a choice. Trains are already being cancelled because of colleagues are having to self isolate.

You're a f**king C**t.

Probably.

Aren't you going to beep beep reopen the doors?

No sir.....Buzz Buzz!

I can't help thinking a third wave is coming.

And we're travelling to Scotland in the 75 at the end of May, assuming the rules don't change in the meantime, instead of using the train!

Unfortunately, if most people now behave as if the pandemic was a thing of the past, and with no more social distancing/masks, I fear you're right... :mellow

I think there will be an increase in cases but don’t think there will be an uptick in hospitalisations or deaths due to the vaccine.

Unvaccinated people are obviously at the greatest risk at present.

The sooner we get through everybody the better, and then we may be into booster jab territory in the autumn.

I personally think there’s a lot to be positive about in the medium to long term, but we’re not out of the woods yet.
