what ATF to put in it ? I only ask as I've seen a few mentioned here but not sure which to go for, not sure what's in it from the previous owner, all I know is that its a clear fluid :S

I’ve used Morris liquimatic DII ATF fluid in my 91 416 with a D16 honda engine Certainly seems to have made the gear change a lot smoother.

I know some people will only use Honda ATF fluid in these gearboxes

ATF-DW1 is the only ATF transmission fluid Honda makes now.

Backwards compatible with ALL Honda auto transmissions, and mixes with any old fluid(s) you may have in the box.

Supposedly very superior, including simultaneously increasing box life and improving the fuel efficiency of the car.

I've done 3 drain and refills with it so far over 10K miles and about 8 years, so I'm still not on "pure" DW1, as I need to complete refills 4 and 5.

No adverse effects. Box seems absolutely fine and as smooth as ever. Can't say I've noticed any fuel economy improvements, though.

Expensive stuff, but I'm doing the right thing by the Honda box.

Cheers both.

Have found some of the Honda stuff on ebay but unsure if it would be legit, 20 l for £70 ?

Is the Honda ATF an older version of their ATF and have sold some off ? just wondering why this company would have it and be selling so cheap :S

That's a great price. Well done. Looks completely legit. Current fluid and brand new. I guess buying in bulk has its benefits!

You'll always get between 2.5L and 3L out of the box on a drain, as the remainder is trapped in the torque converter. The total system capacity is 6L.

This is why you need to keep doing drains/refills with some mileage in between to make sure the new stuff mixes in.

After 1 change, you've got approximately 50% DW1 and 50% old ATF. After 2 changes you've got 75% DW1 and 25% old. After 3, 87.5% DW1 and 12.5% old, and so on. After 5 changes, you've got 97.5% DW1 and 2.5% old.

You've actually got enough DW1 in that purchase to do at least 6 changes and to be honest, probably 7, which would mean a 99.22% concentration when all said and done. I'll let you know when I get there!

Good choice. My local Honda dealers have zero stock, and it's on 'back order' with no eta for delivery as there is a 'supply problem'. I bought a 4 litre can online from Cox Motor Parts https://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/honda-s ... -4-litres/ for not much less before I saw this thread.....

Price has gone up considerably, by the looks of it. I was paying about £12.95 for a litre a few years back, but I'm not sure what I paid for my 4L bottles at the time. Certainly not the £60-£70 I'm seeing them for now! I'm off to check what I've got left, as to be honest, that 20L drum is about the same price as a 4L bottle, so if I need more than 4L in addition to the bottles I've got left, guess what I'm buying!
