"Homer" The Rover 220 coupe

Post by harkins77 »

Well here are my pictures of Homer my new purchase 220 coupe.

The name comes from it's original last 3 letters of its first reg plate DOE I know it's spelled wrong but it was the first thing that popped into mine and my mates head on the drive back home with it in tow.

The pics will show the various bits of work on the body and interior and that doesn't include the engine and the oil leak which is more than just the usual leak.
Image

Close up of the nearside headlight which has a crack in it which will need replacing and the first part of the damage to the bonnet.
Image

The rest of the damage to the bonnet is shown here and will require a replacement one due to the severity of the rot it would be best to just replace it.
Image

Next is the nearside wing where I believe that most of the cars start to go. Doesn't look that bad from the outside but have been told it would be better to get a replacement wing.
Image

This one I had to take as I didn't see it myself I had it pointed out to me when we were half way home. Doesn't really matter as I was going to change the wheels anyway for something a little bigger.
Image

Moving to the drivers door there is rot setting in at the bottom of the door and it looks like there is a slight scrape on the bottom of the bodywork just above the sill
Image

Moving to the back arch it looks like someone has previously done some work on the rear arch and not painted it at the front and there is a little scab just starting on the rear part of the arch. Not that bad really.
Image

The rear of the car isn't that bad just three bits with the most visible being the panel underneath the numberplate being faded so will need painting or replacing. I haven't decided yet on what I'll do. Another bit is the clips that hold the frame round the window have come loose and will need the clips replacing to hold it in place in 2 areas near where the boot meets the rear window. And finally the offside rear cluster needs replacing as the lense has got a hole in it.
Image

Image

The drivers side of the car is a lot better than the passenger side and the only bits I can see on the exterior is the wing mirror needs replacing as it looks like someone has replaced it in the past but with a wrong colored one so that will need sorting and also a slight scab of rust on the drivers side up at the top but seeing as I'm going to be replacing the bonnet it's not a problem.
Image

And on the interior the the only problem I can see apart from removing a Nokia in car cradle (seeing as I don't own a Nokia) is to replace the drivers door card due to some cuts in the arm rest side of the door card.
Image

The car will be going to a friends workplace tomorrow for an engine steam clean so that the damage to the engine can be located.

luckily parts for these cars are reasonably priced and most 200 stuff is interchangeable. good look with the work ahead of you.

Thanks Dave I do think I've taken on quite a bit to do. But I guess it will be well worth it.

I've also just remembered that the drivers side bumper fog light isn't lighting up either could be a bulb problem but will see when I get started on it.

Yeah I can't wait to see it done but trying to locate the parts I need to fix in the right colour is becoming a nightmare. I've sent a request off to parts gateway today for a wing, bonnet and sump and one quote I got back was £264 for all bits but not all in the right colour or the 2 others that replied could only manage 2 of the parts and still not in the right color.

I can get the bonnet in nightfire red and also the wing but I would prefer not to have to paint them.

nightfire red and tahiti blue seem to be the most common colours, well all the ones i see are anyway. i used to have a red 220 coupe turbo and the colour really suits them.

Yeah I know I'm kinda finding that getting the flame red parts difficult. I think I've found a good wing and bonnet very close to me but again it's in tahiti blue so I think I'm resigned to having to repaint the parts I get but as long as they are good and I get a good paint match the job will be a carrot.

I must admit the more I look at the car the more I can't wait to actually get to drive it. I think I'm a fair way off doing that yet but it's still exciting. *laughs*.

Well work started last night on Homer by removing the in built car kit the previous owner had installed into the car. That in itself took took a while to do so much that it got dark before anything else could be started. But it's a start. Hopefully some bits will be bought in the next few days to be able to make a proper start.

The car has gone to a friends workplace to have the engine steam cleaned and have the once over so will be away for a few weeks that gives me some time to try and source the bits I need. I did just miss out on a 220 coupe on ebay that was the same red as my car and would have been ideal as a donor car.

I have managed to locate a tahiti blue one but with a honda engine in that has a good nice and very neat interior/door cards and a few other bits. The body work is not good however and looks like stevie wonder passed it on it's last MOT due to the amount of welds filler and the location of them. :laughing

But it has a small amount of tax and MOT on it so could be ran for a short time. But I can salvage some parts off it and then still need to source the bonnet and will try and fix the other bits on the car.
